The Healing Power of Mānuka Honey for Gastroenteritis

Introduction

Gastroenteritis, commonly known as "stomach flu," is a widespread illness affecting millions of people worldwide each year. This condition can lead to unpleasant symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, and general discomfort. While rest and proper hydration are essential for a speedy recovery, there are natural remedies that can assist in alleviating symptoms and promoting healing. Among these remedies is Mānuka Honey, a unique and highly beneficial type of honey originating from New Zealand. In this article, we will delve into the advantages of using Mānuka Honey for gastroenteritis and provide recommendations for choosing the right UMF-rated honey.

Understanding Mānuka Honey

Mānuka Honey is produced from the nectar of the Mānuka tree (Leptospermum scoparium), which is indigenous to New Zealand. What sets Mānuka Honey apart from other honey varieties is its remarkable antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. These properties stem primarily from the presence of a compound called methylglyoxal (MGO), which occurs in significantly higher concentrations in Mānuka Honey compared to regular honey.

The Benefits of Mānuka Honey for Gastroenteritis

1. Antibacterial Properties: Gastroenteritis often results from bacterial infections, and Mānuka Honey's potent antibacterial properties can help combat the harmful bacteria responsible for the ailment. The application of Mānuka Honey to your digestive tract can assist in eradicating or inhibiting the growth of these bacteria, potentially reducing the duration and severity of symptoms.

2. Anti-Inflammatory Effects: The anti-inflammatory properties of Mānuka Honey can help soothe the inflamed lining of the stomach and intestines, offering relief from the abdominal pain and discomfort associated with gastroenteritis.

3. Immune System Support: Mānuka Honey contains antioxidants and compounds that bolster the immune system, aiding your body in its fight against the infection causing gastroenteritis. A robust immune response can lead to a shorter duration of illness.

4. Promotes Healing: Renowned for its ability to facilitate tissue repair and wound healing, Mānuka Honey can assist in mending any damage to the intestinal lining caused by inflammation or infection.

Using Mānuka Honey for Gastroenteritis

To harness the benefits of Mānuka Honey for gastroenteritis, follow these guidelines:

1. Choose High-Quality Mānuka Honey with a UMF Rating: Opt for Mānuka Honey that carries a certified Unique Mānuka Factor (UMF) rating. The UMF rating serves as a marker of the honey's quality and potency, with higher ratings indicating greater efficacy.

2. Internal Consumption: Mānuka Honey can be consumed directly, either by taking a spoonful or by mixing it into warm water or herbal tea. Ingesting it three times a day can help soothe your digestive system and enhance your immune response.

3. Maintain Hydration: Stay adequately hydrated throughout your illness by drinking clear fluids and electrolyte-rich beverages. You can enhance the soothing effect of Mānuka Honey by adding it to warm water or herbal teas.

4. Rest and Dietary Care: While Mānuka Honey can alleviate symptoms, do not underestimate the importance of rest and maintaining a bland diet until your stomach settles. Avoid spicy, fatty, or dairy-heavy foods during your recovery.

Conclusion

Gastroenteritis can bring discomfort and distress, but the natural healing properties of Mānuka Honey offer a soothing and supportive solution. When choosing Mānuka Honey for gastroenteritis, Whenua Honey's UMF-certified products with high ratings ensure you receive the maximum benefits. Remember that while Mānuka Honey can be a valuable aid in managing symptoms, consulting with a healthcare professional is crucial for severe cases or persistent symptoms.

The choice of UMF grade for Mānuka Honey can depend on the severity of your gastroenteritis and your personal preferences. Here's a general guideline for selecting a UMF grade:

1. **UMF 10+**: This grade offers a moderate level of MGO and is suitable for mild to moderate cases of gastroenteritis. It can provide relief from symptoms and support your immune system during recovery.

2. **UMF 15+**: If you're experiencing moderate to severe symptoms of gastroenteritis, UMF 15+ honey may be a better choice. It contains a higher concentration of MGO, which can offer more potent antibacterial and anti-inflammatory effects.

3. **UMF 20+ or 25+**: These higher UMF grades are recommended for severe cases of gastroenteritis or if you're looking for the most potent therapeutic effects. They have a significantly higher concentration of MGO, making them suitable for more intense relief and immune support.

Ultimately, the choice between UMF 10+, 15+, 20+, or 25+ depends on the severity of your condition and your personal preference for honey strength. Whenua Honey offers a range of UMF-rated products, so you can select the grade that aligns with your needs. It's advisable to consult with a healthcare professional if you have severe or persistent gastroenteritis symptoms to determine the most suitable UMF grade for your situation.  Shop our range of Mānuka Honey's here!

I have the gastroenteritis at the moment from eating farmed Abalone in China at a restaurant in Qingdao airport I’ll have you know. There is only one there that sells Abalone.
I’m using Greek honey Yogurt and 7+ UMF Manuka Honey I’ve had the Gastro for 72 hours.
I had it almost under control in 48 hours but made the mistake of eating ice cream last night and it has come back again this morning.
I’m eating the honey straight from the container. Had 3 desert spoonfuls this morning and its almost stopped the Gastro.
If this is a little too much detail for some people I apologize.

    Regards, David
